The Temple Scam: He Fell for a Mortal

After my best friend and boyfriend teamed up to swindle me out of all my savings, I ended up on the streets of Bangkok and collapsed outside a dilapidated temple.

When I woke, there was a bowl of hot congee by my bedside and a note: “Take your time. No need to rush.” The handwriting was crooked, but the words warmed me to the bone.

The one who saved me was a monk in red robes. He had entered the monastery at seven and spent twenty-one years in practice. His eyes were as clear as still water. He said everything happened through fate, unaware that from that day on, he began kissing me in his dreams.

He was a Buddhist monk, and I was a woman of the secular world.

He let worldly desire into his heart for me, and I broke the precepts for him.

Later, he took off his robes and knelt before me. “I've fallen in love with you. I'm willing to leave the monastery.”

But our trials were only just beginning.
