The Money-Mad Heiress Keeps Blowing Her Cover in the Young Marshal’s Heart

In an alternate Republican-era China divided among warlords, Song Nanjin is the overlooked young heiress of a fallen family, but in truth she's an overworked office worker who transmigrated into a book and takes on countless side jobs just to stay alive. Lu Beichen is a cold and suspicious northern young marshal who commands a powerful army and suffers from a leg injury.

To repay the huge bill of exchange the original owner incurred by using her cousin's photo in a newspaper ad to deceive the young marshal, Song Nanjin disguises herself as a stammering translator in black-rimmed glasses and sneaks into his residence to work as a French interpreter. By day, she trembles under the watchful eye of her terrifying boss; by night, she becomes a master of time management, juggling several creditors while frantically earning money. Armed with a fake photograph, Lu Beichen searches the whole city for the “pen pal who deceived him,” never realizing that the soulmate he has been searching for day and night is the money-mad interpreter right before his eyes. He even starts wildly convincing himself that she is the one.

“I've paid it all back, principal and interest!” At the Shiliupu Wharf, Song Nanjin clings desperately to her cash box. Lu Beichen raises the butt of his gun and tilts her chin up, his eyes filled with obsessive madness. “You tricked me out of my betrothal gift and think you can buy me off? Under military law, you'll have to pay with yourself!”

When a cold-faced detective and the heir to a southern merchant family arrive in Shanghai carrying account books, her many secret identities are torn to shreds. In this tangled game of mistaken identities, who will end up as whose captive bird?
