Yun Shuyue has two secrets.
First, he approached Xie Jingque to kill his entire family.
Second, he has been painstakingly imitating Xie Jingque’s idealized first love, Su Li.
For the sake of revenge, Yun Shuyue has fashioned himself into a bewitching beauty. He plays Su Li’s favorite songs, mimics the curve at the corner of Su Li’s eyes when she lowers her head, and stages one stand-in act after another before Xie Jingque.
Xie Jingque falls for it, just as he hoped.
He takes Yun Shuyue back to the Xuantian Sword Sect and keeps him by his side. Though he treats him coldly, they spend every night together.
Yun Shuyue thinks he’s playing a game he’s sure to win.
Until one day, he finds an old painting hidden in Xie Jingque’s study. It shows a young man in fine clothes, eyes bright and lively, holding a short blade as he turns back to smile at someone outside the picture. The smile is bold and brilliant, like a ray of sunlight suddenly breaking through the clouds on a winter’s day.
Two small characters are written in the lower right corner:
Shen Yan.
That was Yun Shuyue’s real name, the one he used before he turned twelve, back when the Luoxing Pavilion had yet to be destroyed.
So the heart-shaped birthmark on his earlobe didn’t mean he happened to resemble Su Li. It meant Su Li happened to resemble him.
Yun Shuyue clutched the painting and laughed aloud.
He had gone to such lengths to become someone’s stand-in, only to discover that he was the original all along.
And Xie Jingque had spent all these years searching for the wrong person, loving the wrong person, and hating the wrong person.
Suddenly, Xie Jingque pushed the door open. Seeing the painting in his hands, his expression changed drastically. “Who told you to touch that?”
Yun Shuyue turned around. His peach-blossom eyes curved slightly, and he smiled with the same bewitching charm as ever, though his gaze was ice-cold.
“Xie Jingque, guess who the ‘Yan Yan’ you’ve been searching for all these years really is?”
