She Holds a Thousand-Year Demolition Notice

Ji Tang, a demolition crew leader, took a bronze seal from the Tang Dynasty that an old man handed her at a demolition site. From that moment on, she became Xi'an's "Demolition Envoy."

Her mission is to protect the city's memories: to decide what is worth preserving and what can be let go. The buildings and people vanishing in the wake of urban renewal deserve someone to see them off on their final journey. The price is her life span. She has counted it up: she probably has about two years left.

She has no intention of trying to extend that time.

Her partner is Lu Chen, a researcher at the Cultural Relics Protection Bureau. Quiet and restrained, he appears whenever she is in the greatest danger. He never says, "Be careful." He only says, "I'll go with you."

This is a story about protection, inheritance, and farewell. The city's memories may fade, and people may leave, but some things, once recorded, are never truly lost.
