After Mother-in-Law Moves to the Island, Her Strength Brings the Whole Family Good Fortune

Lin Guilan had been widowed for twelve years, raising two children all by herself.

Late one night, she got a call from her son: “Mom, Xiaowen is showing signs of a miscarriage. Could you come help?”

Without hesitation, she sold her chickens and pigs, packed up some local specialties, and boarded a slow green train.

The young man who met her at the station tried to help with her luggage and nearly threw his back out.

She lifted it with one hand and gave a sheepish grin. “I'm a little stronger than most.”

When she arrived on the island, she found that her son was away on a mission, her daughter-in-law was afraid of her, and the neighbors looked down on country folk.

But who could have guessed that this plain, unsophisticated mother-in-law would use her strength and sharp business sense to set up a stall and open a shop, bringing prosperity to the whole family?

Later, when her daughter fled domestic abuse and came to her for help, she said, “You've got your mom. Don't be afraid!”

Later, when terrible news came about her son, she wiped away her tears and told her daughter-in-law, “Whether to keep the baby or not is your decision.”
