A Qing Dynasty Mansion: A Poor Boy's Feuds and Grudges

This story follows Shen Yan, a poor young man in the Qing dynasty, as he claws his way to the top: an orphan from a humble family, a servant in a county magistrate's household, the magistrate's son-in-law, and finally a county magistrate himself. Through Shen Yan's relationships with the magistrate's wife, daughter, and maids, the novel explores his transformation in status, emotional entanglements, and tangled grudges and vendettas. Combining household intrigue, political maneuvering, emotional entanglements, and the ups and downs of officialdom, the story weaves together flirtatious tension and struggles over self-interest. At its heart are the themes of rising from humble beginnings, testing the boundaries of power and desire, and working for the people's welfare, with both satisfying triumphs and profound insight into human nature.
