That Fool from the Shen Family

Everyone knows I'm the most insignificant person in Gu Jingchen's life.

He gives me money, connections, and every material comfort, but never love.

Because he has a fiancée, Shen Manni, whose place by his side is perfectly legitimate.

And I'm nothing more than a way to relieve his loneliness, a lover kept hidden from the world.

Later, on a rainy night, Shen Manni's older brother, Shen Zhuoran, the well-known simpleton of the whole city, held me tight and clumsily filled a sheet of paper with my name, using the only character he knew how to write.

He pressed his only piece of candy into my hand and smiled like a child. “Don't cry, big sister. If it hurts, it'll fly away.”

But the Shen family would never accept me, and Gu Jingchen couldn't protect me.

Shen's father devised a sinister plan to force Shen Zhuoran and me into sleeping together. When it failed, he tried to silence me for good.

As the icy lake water poured into my mouth and nose, I thought I was going to die.

When I opened my eyes again, I saw that Shen Zhuoran's gaze was clear and lucid.

Soaking wet, he held me close, trembling. His voice was hoarse but firm:

“Don't be afraid, big sister. From now on, I'll protect you.”
