The Tale of the Green Robe

The Blue Robe is a classical realist novel set in the fictional Great Zhou dynasty. Following Chen Xun, a poor young man from Guanzhong, as he pursues a career through the imperial examinations, it offers a sweeping portrait of the survival, struggles, and growth of an ordinary scholar in the waning years of a feudal dynasty.

The title, “Blue Robe,” carries three meanings. First, it is the emblematic garment of a scholar from a humble family, symbolizing his origins. Second, it represents a life of modesty and integrity, evoking the idea of “a blue robe untouched by dust.” Third, it is a metaphor for the shackles of fate: once you put on the blue robe, you bear the responsibility of changing your destiny, and there is no turning back.

The story begins on a winter night in Chenjiagou. It follows a farmer’s son who, through exceptional talent and unyielding determination, makes his way through the county, prefectural, and academy exams, then the provincial, metropolitan, and palace examinations, ultimately placing third in the palace exam and entering government service. But this is no simple tale of inspiration through the imperial examinations. It is an epic of human nature, exploring the painful struggle between ideals and reality, individuals and their era, and original aspirations and corruption.
