The Story

When Jing Yao was eight, he told a little girl, “No matter how far away you are, I'll run to come get you.”

He never went. But he did start running. He ran for ten years, all the way to provincial champion, national-level athlete, and Linhai University.

He'd completely forgotten what happened that day. The only thing he remembered was a key, worn against his chest and never taken off.

Wen Yining hadn't forgotten.

She spent ten years looking for him, tracking his race results and memorizing his best pace, searching every blurry news photo for a glimpse of that key. Then she rented the apartment ahead of time and saved the room next door for him.

The day he walked through the door, she was standing in the living room wrapped in a towel. It wasn't a coincidence: when she heard the lock turn, she'd rushed into the bathroom and wet her hair.

“Junior, have you never seen a girl fresh out of the shower before?”

Jing Yao turned his head away, the tips of his ears bright red.

He didn't recognize her.

That's all right, Wen Yining thought. I've waited ten years. A few more days won't make a difference.

First, she wanted to put some weight on him. He was too thin; it broke her heart. She wanted him to know that he didn't have to shoulder everything alone when he ran, that someone would be waiting at the finish line, and that someone would bring him antiseptic when he got hurt.

As for that key and that promise…

“When will you finally recognize me, you idiot?”
