Judge Dee of the Great Tang: Shadows Stir in the Divine Capital

Di Renjie (630–700), courtesy name Huaiying, was from Taiyuan in Bingzhou. A distinguished politician of the Tang dynasty and a chancellor under Wu Zhou, he was known for his integrity, impartiality, and incorruptibility. While serving as assistant minister of the Court of Judicial Review, he resolved more than ten thousand long-pending cases in a single year. His judgments were fair and sound, and no one appealed, earning him renown for his precision in solving cases.

He served as governor in several regions, where he cared for the people and achieved outstanding results. As chancellor, he dared to speak frankly and feared no powerful figures. He urged Wu Zetian to reinstate Prince of Luoyang Li Xian as crown prince, safeguarding the Li Tang dynasty. He also recommended worthy officials such as Zhang Jianzhi and Yao Chong, laying the foundation for the Tang restoration.

Combining the character of a brilliant investigator with the vision of a chancellor, Di Renjie was revered by later generations as a pillar of the Tang dynasty. He remains an exemplar of both distinguished statesmanship and judicial acumen in Chinese history.
