This book tells the story of programmer Lu Yaoyao, who dies suddenly and unexpectedly becomes a temporary patch worker tasked with fixing bugs in the “Three Realms System.” He discovers that the so-called world of immortals is actually a virtual “sandbox” that requires maintenance. His direct supervisor, the cool and aloof administrator Su Jin, is bound to him by a brutal connection: “She must kill him nine times to save the world.”
While fixing absurd bugs such as the “Jade Emperor account crash,” Lu Yaoyao teams up with awakened “old coworkers” like Sun Wukong and Nezha to fight Chiyou, a traitor who intends to format the world. In the midst of the crisis, he fights alongside Su Jin and chooses to risk upgrading the System rather than destroy it. In the end, he becomes a founder and one of the System's highest-ranking administrators, all thanks to his status as a “patch.”
But soon they discover that even this “real world” may be another sandbox. The mastermind, Bai Qiming, the System's architect, steps into the open. He regards all living beings as experimental data and launches a destructive formatting protocol. Faced with the ultimate crisis, Lu Yaoyao chooses not to fight back. Instead, he gathers the will of every being in every world to “keep living” and writes the ultimate code, allowing an imperfect world to endure. In the end, while shouldering the duty of protecting the world, he and Su Jin also protect the small happiness they share, carrying on with their daily routine of “bugs that will never be fully fixed.”
This is a story about saving the world by fixing code. At its heart, it explores why feelings, memories, and imperfections are precious in the face of cold rules and grand destinies. It celebrates the brilliance of ordinary people who, even in desperate circumstances, choose to repair rather than delete, and protect rather than destroy.
