She woke among a heap of corpses, a knife wound in her shoulder and 217 bodies beneath her. Beneath the bushy beard covering her face was a woman. With the modern knowledge in her head, she survived the butchery.
She had only just awakened, too. In her previous life, the rebels had tortured her to death in the Imperial Ancestral Temple. When she opened her eyes in this life, her hand was already gripping a blade. Atop a mountain of corpses, the two women made a pact:
You help me destroy all my enemies, and I help you command an army and rule the realm.
From then on
She used her wits to plan supply routes, establish military discipline, tame wild horses, and hunt tigers, climbing step by step through the chaos.
She used her blade to settle blood debts, root out traitors, and strike down her enemies. The names on her list dwindled one by one.
In the sixth year of Chenghui, they captured the imperial capital and executed the powerful ministers. The two women ruled together, sharing the throne and governing the realm.
but that was later.
For now, she was just a bearded kitchen guard, watching over the commandery princess’s meals by day and selling woodwork at the West Market by night. She turned her earnings into grain, hid it in the corner of her room, and used it to support a woman who had followed her from the martial estate.
She thought she could just keep going like this.
Until the Heir of Prince Ding, disguised as a man, came to her door and told her to go to the Shen family to arrange a betrothal.
Until Hu Laoda brought his people into the city and set his sights on the Third Prince’s secondary consort.
Until Xiao Jingluan climbed through her window and said, “There are five names left on the list. Three are in Xiacheng.”
In times of chaos, there is no way back.
