Set between 1925 and 1949, this is the story of three Yang siblings who go their separate ways over their beliefs. The elder brother, Yang Liren, joins the Kuomintang; the younger brother, Yang Liqing, joins the Communist Party; and their sister, Yang Lihua, moves between the two sides. Through the standoff between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, the flames of resistance against Japan, and the smoke of civil war, the brothers struggle to choose between their convictions and family ties, facing each other in direct confrontations time and again. Meanwhile, Liqing becomes entangled with the family of his mentor, Qu En. After Qu En’s death, Lihua adopts his son. Their father, Yang Tinghe, hopes for the family to reunite, but his wish goes unfulfilled, and the siblings ultimately end up on opposite sides of the Taiwan Strait. The series depicts the intertwining of individual lives and the fate of the nation, exploring the choices of faith and the shattering of family ties amid the tides of history.
