In Featherfall City, geese are the chosen of the Great Silver Bell, while ducks are nothing but dirt beneath their feet.
The chairman of the White Steam Power Plant is dead. The evidence? Irrelevant. What matters is that the whole city saw the green-headed duck pinned beneath the gallows, a lowly duck denied even the right to a defense. The gallows stand in the middle of the municipal square, the Great Silver Bell casting its shadow over everything. All that remains is for the midnight chime to pronounce his death.
Detective Edwin Greyfeather stands at the back of the crowd, expressionless.
He can see what others cannot. It is his gift, and his curse. The chairman was not killed by that duck. The killer is the system, the frenzy, every goose who raised a hand.
Wado tugs at his sleeve. “There’s no time. Twenty-four hours.”
“That’s enough.” Edwin stubs out his cigarette. “Come on. Let’s go see the dirtiest part of this city.”
