Huangyuan River

This is a sweeping novel about ordinary people struggling and striving amid the tides of their times. Set on the Loess Plateau around the 1980s, the story centers on the Yang brothers, Yang Shuangquan and Yang Shuangming, from Shigejie Village, while painting a broad social panorama that stretches from the countryside to the city. The elder brother, Yang Shuangquan, puts down roots in the land, shouldering his burdens between poverty and responsibility. His younger brother, Yang Shuangming, holds on to his dreams and longs to carve out a path of his own through study and hard work. Around them are figures such as Qiao Weihong, a village teacher who stays true to love; Liu Zhenhan, a local official torn between career advancement and conscience; and Tian Yu, a city girl who loves fiercely and lives boldly. Through its sensitive portrayal of ordinary lives, the novel reveals the resilience and dignity, pain and aspirations of common people in a time of great change.
