Reflections on Cultivation

This is a book about the essence of life and spiritual cultivation. It begins with a question about a bowl of water at the foot of a mountain: Is the water inside the body or outside it? The question seems simple, yet it leads to the book's central idea: the mysterious gateway, which is neither inside nor outside the body, and our original nature, which we are always searching for but have never lost.

The book does not pile on abstruse terminology. Instead, it carefully examines the subject, moving from biology and physics to everyday experience. Life is not a thing but a process; the mysterious gateway is not a location but a state in which spirit and vital energy unite; stillness is not sitting motionless, but a way to stop the mind from wandering; and the original spirit is not some mysterious entity, but awareness itself, which you can perceive right now.

From the essence of life to the mysterious gateway, from stilling the mind through contemplation to observing the original spirit within, the book ultimately returns to daily life: how to live in your original nature while eating, walking, and weathering emotional changes. It does not promise enlightenment. It simply offers a lamp, so those on the path can see that what you seek has never left you.
