After Mistaking Him for My Husband, I Became the General Who Protects the Nation's Princess Consort

In the seventh year of Yong'an under the Great Yong Dynasty, the new emperor is only fourteen, and the Empress Dowager rules from behind the curtain. The regent, Xiao Jue, holds power over the court, commands allies across the realm, frames loyal officials, and has everything under his thumb. The only person capable of standing against the regent is Gu Yanci, the mighty general guarding Yanmen Pass in the northern frontier with an army of a hundred thousand Black Armor troops. A descendant of the dynasty's founding heroes, he made a name for himself at a young age and has won countless victories, remaining utterly loyal to the imperial family. But his cold, ruthless nature has earned him the nickname "Living Yama" among the people, along with rumors that he brings misfortune to his wives: the women engaged to him before all died unexpectedly, and no one in the capital dares marry him. The power struggle at court reaches a boiling point. Hoping to win Gu Yanci over or bring him under control, the regent issues an imperial edict in the emperor's name, betrothing Shen Qingyao, the eldest legitimate daughter of Minister of Revenue Shen Jing, to Gu Yanci and ordering her to join his army at Yanmen Pass as soon as they are married. The Shen family is a close ally of the regent and dares not defy the edict, but this sets the stage for the central reason behind the bride substitution.
