Synopsis of Bloodbath in the Devil’s Den
From 1937 to 1945, Shanghai was reduced to an isolated island. Inside a Spanish-style mansion at 76 Jisifeier Road, the Wang Jingwei regime’s secret service headquarters quietly came into being, swiftly turning into a den that swallowed the light. Ding Mocun’s sinister schemes and Li Shiqun’s mad ambition converged there. Under the control of Inozuka Zensaku of the Japanese military’s Special Service Agency, they wove a web of terror across Shanghai. Bank massacres, attacks on newspaper offices, kidnappings and extortion… Bloodshed spread, and everyone lived in fear.
Yet darkness never swallowed everything. The guns of Chen Gongshu, an assassin for the Military Statistics Bureau, rang out along Yuyuan Road, and traitors such as Fu Xiao’an and Zhang Xiaolin were struck down one after another. Pan Hannian, the Chinese Communist Party’s underground leader, laid a silent chess game, while red agents such as Guan Lu endured humiliation and infiltrated the devil’s den to obtain vital intelligence. Green Gang boss Du Yuesheng directed events from Hong Kong, Huang Jinrong shut himself away to protect himself, and Zhang Xiaolin plunged into the abyss of treason. International spies also moved through the shadows: Richard Sorge obtained strategic secrets, while Yoshiko Kawashima bewitched the masses with her ghostly presence. This was a deadly game involving many factions, with assassination, betrayal, infiltration, and turning agents all unfolding without pause.
Inside the den, power and greed ultimately turned its poisonous fangs inward. Li Shiqun wielded immense power in the southeast, yet died in agony after a “Hongmen banquet,” leaving behind a cloud of suspicion. Ding Mocun clung to life, only to face a firing squad after the bells of victory rang. With Japan’s defeat, the headquarters at 76 Jisifeier Road collapsed with a roar, leaving behind nothing but ruins and blood debts.
Taking a panoramic view, the novel recreates those turbulent years when Shanghai was an isolated island. It delves into the struggles of Wang Jingwei, the scheming of Zhou Fohai, the ruthlessness of Dai Li, the disappointments of Xu Enzeng, and the choices made by countless ordinary people swept along by the currents of history.
The wonderful description vividly describes the brutality of Wang's puppet secret agent headquarters!
I like this novel very much 👍👍👍
