Tree Ancestor: From Underachiever to Academician

His hands shook for twenty years. In the end, he steadied an entire civilization.

Zhou Zheng was a mediocre student who had made it into a second-tier university. At a group meeting, he said, “I like trees,” and the whole room burst out laughing.

To graduate, he learned to pad his work, cultivate connections, and chase trending topics. Of the thirty-seven papers he published, not one was something he truly wanted to write. His colleagues called him an “academic locust,” and he had nearly forgotten that in his first year of graduate school, he had written in his notebook: “I want to know why trees can live for so long.”

Then one night, a news alert appeared: the five-thousand-year-old Yellow Emperor Cypress was dying.

He dropped his phone and dug out that dust-covered notebook. The next day, he packed his suitcase and boarded a slow train bound for Huangling.

Deep in the Loess Plateau, Jiang, the tree keeper, told him, “Trees can talk. You just can’t understand them.”

Under the microscope, he discovered a truth that overturned everything he knew: hidden inside the dying tree’s cells was a secret that could make human cells divide again.

When word got out, the world went mad. A corporate conglomerate sent in mercenaries, a Nobel laureate flew in overnight, a mole leaked the data, and a sixteen-year-old girl with progeria entrusted him with her life.

A deeper truth gradually emerged: the five-thousand-year-old tree was guarding something that should never be awakened.

When seven ancient trees awoke at once, when the girl he had saved stood at the tribunal and said, “I want both,” and when Jiang, who had guarded the tree for thirty-eight years, finally merged with its trunk, Zhou Zheng understood: he wasn’t just saving a tree. He was saving the roots of a civilization.

In 2034, beneath the Starcore Tree in Beijing, a new sapling broke through the earth and called him “Grandpa.”

He crouched down and gently touched its leaves.

“You are the future.”
