Put the Stars in Your Pocket

Shen Yu's motto in life was simple: He was better off alone.

That was until he “found” a child at the mall.

Five years old, not much of a crier, and always smiling, with one missing tooth.

She would put the best food in his bowl and say, “Dad, you should eat more”;

leave the little light in the entryway on when he worked late;

when he went on business trips, write what she wanted to say in pinyin on sticky notes and cover the fridge door with them.

“Dad, when are you coming home?”

“Dad, I didn’t cry today.”

“Dad, I miss you a little.”

“Dad, I love you.”

Shen Yu thought he was the one who had taken the child in.

Later, he realized

that the child had taken in the man who had stood alone in the rain for so long.
