Nonhuman: Monsters in the City

“Dark realism” + “cinematic storytelling” + “no narration” + “modern city of demons and the uncanny” + “multiple factions” + “not brainless” + “not a wish-fulfillment romp, but a story with logic” + “ensemble cast” The barriers between the Three Realms have long since dissolved. The modern city is nothing more than a hunting ground where the gods look down upon all living things. With the divine race's heavenly fortune dwindling, they use the spirits of demons as kindling and mortal lives as fuel, treating all beings as mere dogs of straw. Xiao Feng of the northern fox clan was branded the foremost of the Three Sinful Demons, the Demon of Wrath, after his dearest human friend was brutally killed and he flew into a rage, staining the Central Plains with blood. Sealed for a thousand years, he has lost most of his demonic power. Now the barrier has shattered, and demons have returned to the human world. Wrath, obsession, and greed rise together. Demons from every corner lie low in the shadows of the city, struggling to survive beneath the gods' watchful eyes. Zhang Manni, a mortal girl, bears heavenly fortune, but she was never its chosen master. She is merely a vessel coveted by the gods. The gods do not pity humans or demons, nor do they care about good and evil. They care only about profit and loss. Demons do not do evil for its own sake. They just want to survive. And the demon despised by all three realms only wants to protect one insignificant person beneath a cold, unyielding heavenly order. Heaven and earth are not benevolent; they treat all things as dogs of straw. If demons can feel love, then the gods are devils.
