Republican-Era Mystery: Dreams of Old Jing

A renowned Peking opera star is mysteriously cut in half onstage, her death eerily recreating the infamous case of Judge Bao executing Chen Shimei. Rumors spread, and panic grips the city.

To quell the unrest, Huo Yunzheng, commander of the garrison and the heavily armed “Wolf Warlord,” forcibly recruits Shen Yulan, a chief forensic pathologist whose identity is sensitive and reputation notorious: a former heir of the Qing dynasty. One is crude and overbearing, treating rules as meaningless; the other is aloof and fastidious, taking science as gospel. Their first encounter is charged with hostility.

But when Shen Yulan bends over a corpse in the autopsy room to “listen to the bones,” using a scalpel to strip away superstition and expose a human conspiracy; when Huo Yunzheng is struck by a deadly poison and pulled back from death by Shen Yulan with nothing but a hairpin... these two opposites are forced to work together on a series of sinister cases.

A string of murders at the theater, antiques concealing deadly danger, a surging movement to restore the monarchy, and foreign enemies lying in wait. The mastermind, the Hidden Dragon Society, stirs up trouble with occult arts, hoping to overthrow the established order through fear. Huo Yunzheng's gun clears the path ahead for Shen Yulan; Shen Yulan's scalpel cuts through the layers of deception for Huo Yunzheng.

From using and despising each other to trusting each other with their lives, the cold-faced forensic pathologist is finally warmed by the Wolf Warlord's clumsy tenderness, while the iron-blooded warlord awakens to his duty to his country for the sake of the one he loves. When the final conspiracy engulfs Beiping, he dons a dragon robe and ventures into the tiger's den for him, while the other fights through blood and fire to break through the enemy lines and reach him.

Gun and scalpel stand side by side beneath the fading sun of the old capital, defending justice and the land together. This is a story of taming that begins with a bizarre case, and of deep love forged in troubled times.
