[A groveling husband’s redemption arc × two formidable minds in love × forbidden parasitic poison × heartbreaking romance, adapted from the Hong Kong illustrated book by Hanzi (WBO)]
She can calculate every account in the world; he has suffered a lifetime of love. When a battle of two formidable minds meets a desperate quest to win her back, only that infinity-shaped jade pendant burns brightly at the end of fate
At eighteen, Sheng Xin is the orphaned daughter of the revolutionary party’s “Marigold” cell. Seeking revenge for her father, she climbs through a window into the Jinmen Hotel and presses a pair of hooked blades against a man taking a bath. “Do as I say. Or we both die.”
He is Gu Yanzhou, thirty-five, an “abandoned son” written off the imperial clan’s family register. He bears the “Bone-Eater” parasite: love brings agony, and closeness sets him aflame.
“Your life belongs to me. This debt... will compound with interest.”
She thinks he is a lackey, using him to take bullets for her, investigate the accounts, and build a revolutionary network. He sees her as a pawn, using her to test the parasite, probe the situation, and seek out a dream from a snowy night ten years ago. Yet every clash leaves him in such agony that golden blood soaks through his handkerchief, and burns so fiercely that the pendant sears his heart.
A rival’s schemes, the regent’s assassins, the shared agony of twin parasites: none can stop him from loving her more with every pain, and embracing that love more willingly with every passing day.
Until she discovers the truth: touching her could kill him, but pushing her away could kill her. He chooses to “keep his distance to protect her,” while she, heartbroken, decides to “set him free by leaving.”
And so begins his desperate quest to win her back.
He embarks on a pursuit of “loving her through the pain”: protecting her from the shadows, never daring to draw near, risking his life without seeking recognition. After leaving him, she founds the Shenglin Trading House.
That night, snow and wind engulf Jinmen. He stands three feet below her window, watching her work the abacus until dawn. Golden patterns burn through his heart, and at last he admits
“I’ve fallen in love with her.”
No one hears him. Yet someone stands on the other side of the door all night.
End of Part One. I hope we can meet again in Part Two! (2026.03.08)
It's a bit like Eileen Chang, but it's not the kind of fast food junk article. It's very thoughtful. Is it possible to write a serious drama?
Good looking, the villain attracted me
The novels I like have a sense of history, and they don't completely pursue the formula of cool novels, but just follow their heart.
