When I was ten, my father adopted Liu Shan. Everyone kept saying he was my future husband, and I hated him throughout my girlhood because of it. It wasn't until I was twenty-eight, after enduring hardship, that I realized how good he was to me. But after working himself to the bone to save money for me, he developed a terminal illness and never even got it checked. I only found out when it was too late. In the end, he died, and I lived out my days alone. As I lay dying, I missed him so much that I could almost see him growing old beside me.
