Lin Miaomiao, twenty-four, is a UI designer at Orange Tech. Her desk is covered in blind-box figurines, and her life motto is, “If I can lie down, I’m not going to sit.”
The skill she’s proudest of isn’t graphic design. It’s her imagination.
Gu Yichuan, twenty-six, is the technical director. A graduate of a gifted youth program, he writes excellent code and speaks very little in plain English.
His most infuriating trait isn’t his aloofness. It’s that he really isn’t secretly in love with anyone.
The whole company is saying, “Mr. Gu treats Lin Miaomiao differently.”
After observing him for three months, Lin Miaomiao concluded that he did treat her differently:
He remembered she didn’t drink anything iced. He fixed a bug she’d mentioned in passing the very next day. On the day she took time off, he asked three times, “Where’s Lin Miaomiao?” All in the name of work.
She decided to pretend she hadn’t noticed, to avoid making things awkward.
Until one day, the elevator broke down and the two of them got trapped inside.
Forty minutes. An enclosed space. The perfect atmosphere.
Lin Miaomiao thought, Surely he’s going to confess now?
Gu Yichuan looked at her and earnestly asked,
“Are you hungry? I still have the sandwich I brought this morning at my desk.”
In that moment, Lin Miaomiao understood.
He wasn’t secretly in love with her at all.
He just wanted to be her dad.
Then she went on a blind date.
Gu Yichuan submitted his code incorrectly three times.
Old Zhao asked him, “What are you thinking?”
He was silent for a long time, then said,
“I don’t know how to tell the difference.
But when she said she was leaving, I felt like she couldn’t.”
A story about:
A hopelessly straightforward guy who really only sees the heroine as a coworker

A daydreaming sweetheart who thinks the hero has a crush on her
A clumsy romance that blossoms in the brief pauses between grueling workdays.
The whole company waited three years for the day he finally caught on.
