Breaking Free from the Cocoon: The Tale of Wangji Illuminating the Subtle

The Legend of Po Yu, Wang Ji, and Zhao Wei is an ensemble narrative set in the Jiangnan Mutual Aid District, focusing on women's awakening and the building of a shared society. The story follows key figures such as Liu Zhaowei, Shen Wangji, and Hua Zhijun. Through efforts like compiling The Record of Weaving Lives and The Record of a Thousand Cocoons, they document the struggles and achievements of ordinary women in fields such as economics, medicine, education, and culture. The book portrays both “cocoon breakers,” such as Chunhong, an escaped concubine, and “those with broken wings,” such as Zhou, a widow with a gambling addiction. It also recounts the bloody, tearful history of childbirth as told by Granny Zhao, a midwife, revealing the pain of a thousand years of gender oppression. Meanwhile, the central metaphor of the “cocoon” continues to evolve: from individual escape to collective healing, and from romanticizing the idea of “breaking out of the cocoon and becoming a butterfly” to recognizing that trauma must be “wrapped up,” not forcibly transformed. The work also depicts social initiatives such as Zhijun's medical school breaking gender taboos, the Silk Road Merchants' Guild putting a three-to-seven split between profit and righteousness into practice, and the prison's “atonement cocoon garments.” Together, they reveal the beginnings of a new civilization that takes “weaving” as its method: rather than seizing power through violence, it creates a sustainable society through symbiosis, practical learning, and ethics. Blending historical reflection, institutional innovation, and humanistic concern, the book explores the fundamental questions of how people should live and how society should be organized through silk, ledgers, medical records, and children's rhymes.
