In the third year of the Kaiyun era of Later Jin (946), Khitan cavalry sweeps south, and Bianliang teeters on the brink. Retired professor Feng Zidao transmigrates into the body of Feng Dao, a veteran minister who served four dynasties. When Zhang Yanze's rebel army surrounds the city, he steps forward. Drawing on knowledge far ahead of its time, he holds the besieged city and struggles on until Yelü Deguang arrives in person. He saves the city's people and wins the support of both soldiers and civilians.
After the Khitan withdraw north, he orchestrates events from behind the scenes and is soon chosen by his subordinates as the new emperor. Over the next twenty years, he wages campaigns in the north and south, first defeating Northern Han, then conquering the southern kingdoms, and finally crushing the Khitan and unifying the realm.
After ascending the throne, he introduces reforms, lightens taxes and corvée labor, builds waterworks, and cleans up the bureaucracy. Applying modern principles to improve people's lives, he ushers in a peaceful golden age in which the people live and work in contentment.
