A Fortune-Telling Bubble Tea Addict Joins the Major Crimes Unit

Lu Chen, captain of the Haicheng Criminal Investigation Team, has the highest case clearance rate in the force after eight years on the job. He is a steadfast materialist, right up until the bureau brings in a special consultant named Shentu: a young Taoist priest who wears a robe, carries a peachwood sword, and drinks milk tea every day. Shentu never visits crime scenes to solve cases. He just makes a few calculations and pinpoints the lead. “Captain Lu, the killer ran southeast wearing red underwear. He’s left-handed and had leek pancakes for breakfast.” Lu Chen goes to make an arrest, only half convinced, and actually catches a suspect at the southeast alley entrance wearing red underwear, holding a knife in his left hand, with leek leaves stuck to the corner of his mouth.

From then on, the serious-crimes unit takes a very different turn. Shentu uses divination to find clues, talks suspects into turning themselves in, treats milk tea as a spellcasting medium, and uses his peachwood sword as a pointer. Lu Chen goes from “We can’t have any of this feudal superstition” to “Master Shentu, please read my fortune,” gradually becoming a true believer. Then a bloody case involving the occult, spanning thirty years, comes along. Shentu calculates a reading, his face grave. “Captain Lu, you’re destined for a romantic calamity, and the person who must face it… is me. To solve this case, we’ll have to become cultivation partners.”

Solve the case or get married? That is the question.
