Heir to the Jade Steps

The struggle between “status” and “true affection”: Within the vermilion walls of the Forbidden City, what does it mean to truly belong? Is it the cold name of one’s birth mother inscribed in the imperial genealogy, the warm years spent at an adoptive mother’s side, or the bonds of marriage, brotherhood, and friendship one forges oneself? This story explores how, beneath the weight of supreme power and rigid ritual, individuals seek and protect the “home” formed by their feelings and identity.
