Song of the Seven Spirits

At his master's command, Yun Wuji, who possesses the extraordinary art of “Reading the Currents,” ventures into the Central Plains to investigate the mystery of the “Seven Spirits of the World” reappearing in the martial world. New to the ways of the world, he makes a name for himself through his unusual abilities while investigating the massacre of a Jiangnan escort agency. There, he saves the swordswoman Su Lan, gains his first fragment, and begins his first romance.

As he searches for the fragments scattered across the land, Yun Wuji gathers his core companions: the wandering hero Xie Zhiqiu and the physician Lian Xing. In a series of episodic adventures, the three explore different corners of the martial world, from taverns and gambling dens to the borderlands and Miao territory. They solve strange cases and befriend heroes, while repeatedly clashing with the Mandate Alliance, a faction seeking to collect the fragments and dominate the world. Their friendships and romances deepen, but Yun Wuji gradually realizes that clues to every fragment subtly point to his late master.

After the team gathers six fragments and draws close to the truth, they suffer their most devastating betrayal. Yun Wuji discovers that his closest and most trusted friend, Xie Zhiqiu, is the Mandate Alliance leader's own child, and had approached him solely to manipulate him. Meanwhile, by “Reading the Currents” of the clues connected to all the fragments, Yun Wuji reaches a startling conclusion: the final, seventh fragment is sealed within his own body. He himself is the last and most important “key” his master left behind.
