The Longevity Merit Ledger: Zhao Heng Starts Out as a Spy

Modern programmer Zhao Heng dies suddenly after staying up all night coding, then transmigrates to occupied Shanghai in 1938. He takes over the body of a shoeshine boy mistakenly killed by the Japanese military police. When he wakes, a pitch-black ledger appears in his vision, its golden lettering reading: “Kill traitors and Japanese invaders; earn merit to stay alive.”

Given a second life and knowing how history unfolds, Zhao Heng decides to follow the ultimate path of keeping his head down, never exposing himself of his own accord. He believes that “having no organization is the greatest organization, and having no ties is the strongest form of combat power.” With the System’s skills, he can be an “unofficial hitman” for the Military Statistics Bureau, a “mysterious informant” for the underground Communist Party, or even a “low-level employee” in the Japanese military’s intelligence department. He trades intelligence among the various factions in exchange for merit.
