The Salt Smuggler: A historical tale of power and intrigue about salt, blood, and survival
In a nutshell: At a salt farm in Yangzhou, a literate laborer is swept into a raging storm after discovering a deadly set of private accounts. Caught between officials, merchants, and bandits, he must fight for a way to survive with an abacus in one hand and a blade at his throat.
Synopsis:
During the Yongzheng era, at the Fuchang Salt Farm in Yangzhou, Chen Zhulu, the son of a salt worker, is promoted from the salt fields to the accounting office by the owner, Shen Rong, because he can read and calculate. He thinks he has escaped hard labor, only to stumble upon damning secret accounts revealing that the manager, Liu Mingde, is colluding with Zhou Bingqian, a clerk at the salt administration office, to withhold the workers’ food rations and smuggle government salt. He is plunged into a deadly whirlpool.
Liu Mingde falls, and Zhou Bingqian dies suddenly, but the storm has only just begun. The new clerk, Du Wenyuan, arrives at the salt farm with the authority of an “imperial commissioner.” Three accountants with their own agendas, Lin Jingzhi, Zheng Tong, and Su Wenqian, claim to be auditing the books, but are really there to spy, sow discord, and frame people. A corpse washed ashore, a jujube tree hiding a secret, and a confidential list that could overturn Yangzhou’s entire officialdom… Beneath the surface, the forces at play churn around the little salt-farm wharf, where danger lurks at every turn.
Armed with the Fuchang iron token, a symbol of life and death authority, Chen Zhulu must navigate Shen Rong’s deep cunning, Du Wenyuan’s political pressure, and Lin Jingzhi’s unfathomable schemes. He must wield figures from the ledgers as weapons and use the dockworkers as his eyes and ears. Between the white of the salt fields and the red of blood, he must settle old accounts, expose the traitor, protect the secret, and carve out a way to survive for himself and those who follow him in this merciless world.
This is not the Yangzhou of gifted scholars and beautiful maidens. Here, abacuses rattle, blades gleam coldly, and every grain of salt…
