The East Wind Stirs the Curtain

In the final years of the Northern Song, on Zishi Street in Yanggu County, a woman’s fate is swept into the tide of the times. With Pan Jinlian and Ximen Qing as its starting point, Curtain Blown by the East Wind unfolds as a sweeping portrait of life among the common people, the fortunes of merchants, the struggles of human nature, and the rise and fall of fate. Eschewing lurid depictions, the novel delves into the complex circumstances its characters face in a society bound by rigid codes of propriety. Through the image of “a curtain between them,” it explores power, desire, dignity, and redemption. With delicate prose, the story recreates the sights and customs of the Song dynasty, reshaping figures reduced to mere symbols within the gaps of history and portraying the tragic journey of individuals seeking their identities and dignity under the constraints of their times.
