Chongzhen: From the Start, I Settle Accounts with the Landlord Class

With the System in hand, he launched a sweeping institutional overhaul that spanned the ages:

He used financial tools such as salt-tax tenders and war bonds to break the deadlock of an empty treasury;

He crushed the Eight Banners cavalry head-on with flintlock formations and a modern staff system;

He enacted land limits and land swaps, confronting a land problem that had plagued the realm for millennia;

He established an advisory council and issued a draft constitution, personally placing restraints on absolute imperial power.

Yet every reform unleashed a backlash like an avalanche or tsunami. The powerful plotted their counterattack, the scholar-officials denounced him for “defying ancestral law,” and even his most trusted general knelt to remonstrate: “Your Majesty, this is not the way of an emperor!”

The deeper conflict lay within him: how could a modern soul that believed in equality and the rule of law become the supreme ruler of an autocratic empire? When he overruled all opposition and resolved to steer the Ming toward the uncharted waters of constitutional monarchy, even Empress Zhou, whom he loved dearly, asked in a trembling voice: “My lord, are you trying to save the Ming, or prepare a dignified funeral for her?”

This is a battle against an entire age. Watch as modern thinking overwhelms the ills of antiquity, and see how a lonely reformer bows at the pinnacle of imperial power to kindle a faint light toward the future, for himself and for this ancient civilization.
