[Two powerful leads who dote on each other + Hidden powerhouse + The emperor wins his empress back + Court intrigue + Lighthearted wish fulfillment]
“I refuse to be empress any longer!”
On the night the Noble Consort miscarried, with the entire palace watching her suspiciously, Murong Linlang, the founding empress, did something that shocked the whole court. She promptly admitted to every charge, requested that her title be stripped, and moved into the Cold Palace with three trunks of romance novels.
“The Cold Palace is never locked. I’ll come and go as I please.”
“Your Majesty, take care of yourself.”
From then on, the palace’s atmosphere changed completely.
The once-powerful Murong family collectively gave up trying: her father claimed to be ill and spent every day at home thrashing the rookies on the training grounds; her eldest brother opened a bookshop selling nothing but Emperor-and-Empress fanfiction; her second brother organized horse races and betting with the young dandies; and her little brother became the empress’s personal “logistics manager.”
Meanwhile, Murong Linlang was living her ideal life in the Cold Palace. The only problem was that some emperor kept knocking on her door.
“Your Majesty, the Cold Palace door is flimsy. It can’t stand up to you knocking every day.”
“Then open the door, Empress. I have something to say.”
“I’m asleep. There’s everything in my dreams.”
Rong Che was at his wits’ end. He had spent ten years laying the groundwork, and bringing down the powerful ministers would take time. The Cold Palace had been the safest place for her, but he had never expected his empress to be such a thoroughgoing couch potato, or to be so impossible to look away from.
What he hadn’t expected was this:
The pastry recipe she casually threw away cracked the enemy state’s secret code.
The teacup she knocked over while “sleepwalking” saved the empress dowager’s life.
The scented sachets she taught the consorts to weave foiled a coup.
Then, on the night rebel forces surrounded the palace, Rong Che returned from a bloody battle to find the supposedly lazy empress, who did nothing but eat and sleep, sitting on the dragon throne with a bloodied sword in hand. She raised an eyebrow and smiled at him.
“Your Majesty, you’re late. I’ve already finished the show.”
