Journey to the West: Is the Great Sage Raising a Kid Today?

Handsome Monkey King Sun Wukong had a secret lately.

There was a little snowball in his Water Curtain Cave.

The little monkeys had found him at the foot of the mountain. He was three or four years old, with eyes like black glass steeped in water and skin so soft it seemed it could exude the fragrance of flower nectar.

Sun Wukong picked him up and weighed him in his hand.

“Tsk, you're not even as heavy as a peach.”

And so the lawless Great Sage Equal to Heaven began a chaotic daily routine of raising a child.

He tried to teach the little one to climb a tree, but ended up somersaulting all the way to the South Heaven Gate. When he returned, the little one was still clinging to the tree trunk, tearfully waiting to be rescued.

He took him to steal peaches. Sun Wukong ate his fill, then turned around to see the little one holding the biggest, reddest peach in both hands and saying brightly, “For the Great King.”

When he saw the little one frightened by the young monkeys' pranks, Sun Wukong stamped his Golden Cudgel down, shaking the earth. “Anyone else dares scare him, just try it!”

He raised the little one however he pleased, but protected him in every way.

Then one day, Sun Wukong discovered that the wounds he got in fights healed when the little one touched them.

When Sun Wukong was upset, just having the little one around could calm even the most irritable old ape.

The child always looked at him with the purest eyes, as if he were the whole world.

Sun Wukong scratched his cheek, feeling a little proud and a little restless for reasons he couldn't explain.

He swung the Golden Cudgel with a fierce whistle and demanded gruffly,

“Tell me, what kind of little monster are you?”

Li shrank back, clutching his fur with both little hands. His voice was soft and sweet.

“I-I'm... the Great King's little Li.”
