Dream of the Red Chamber: Daiyu’s Done Playing Along

On the first day she transmigrates into Lin Daiyu, she has just arrived at the Jia family estate. In front of everyone, Jia Mu embraces her, calling her her darling, while Wang Furen “kindly” advises, “You must keep your distance from that little devil from now on.” She expects Daiyu to nervously agree. But Lin Daiyu lifts her misty eyes. Not only is there no trace of timidity in them, she even replies softly, “Auntie is right. But Grandmother loves me dearly, and Brother Baoyu is someone his future bride will have to worry about. As an outsider, I should focus on taking care of my frail health.” With a single sentence, she makes it clear who has the claim to the golden-and-jade match, while neatly distancing herself from the whole affair. Wang Furen and Baochai, standing beside her, both turn pale.
