Set in a parallel world in an imagined era, this is the story of a young man from a remote mountain village. At eighteen, he has lost both parents, and his older sister has married into a neighboring village. His family is destitute, struggling to survive on just two mu of low-lying farmland. Then disaster strikes. On a freezing winter night, Dog Leftover, with too little clothing, rice, or firewood to keep warm, freezes to death on the kang in his family’s three-room earthen house. That is when our true protagonist, another Dog Leftover, transmigrates into his body.
