Inspired by the character and story structure of Wolf Smoke Over Beiping, this novel tells the life story of Wen San, a rickshaw puller who is timid, weak, mercenary, and shrewd, yet still just an ordinary man. Throughout history, countless heroes have risen and fallen in the tide of humanity. But there are far more little people like Wen San, swept along by the turbulent currents of history.
