A down-on-his-luck screenwriter is reborn in Hong Kong in 1985. Using his knowledge of the future, he helps an unknown actor, Zhou Xingxing, become the King of Comedy. The two charge ahead through a golden age, but face clashing ideals, a corporate crackdown, and difficult choices in love. In the end, they change the face of Chinese-language cinema together.
