Youth, Lost and Found Through Self-Redemption

At eighteen, Lin Wanzhi traded ten thousand yuan and seven years of her youth for a gilded cage where all her needs were met.

She thought becoming a kept woman was her only way out of her birth family, never realizing she was stepping into an even deeper abyss. She became the mistress of Chen Jingshan, a man twenty-three years older than her, bore him an unacknowledged son, then struggled through depression and bipolar disorder.

When her son was taken from her and every path of escape was cut off, the twenty-five-year-old woman chose to trade a carefully staged “affair” for her freedom.

The collapse of their seven-year, twisted relationship exposed the truth behind three families and two generations of women, whose lives had been entangled for half a lifetime:

A mother, forced from home for twenty-one years, returns to her daughter’s life.

A wife who thought she had lost both her daughters discovers that one is alive far away.

A man who controlled everything with lies ultimately loses it all.

And deep in the cracks, a battered thornbird finally learns to stop singing for pain

and sing instead for the light shining through the cracks.
