I get sucked into an angsty novel set in the 1980s, written by my best friend, and become a cannon-fodder supporting heroine who doesn’t survive past chapter three. To stay alive, I try to steer clear of the plot, but both male leads corner me at the same time.
The chaste cadre sent down to the countryside gives me a cold, appraising look. “There’s something off about you.”
The military district regiment commander, with a bandit’s air about him, narrows his eyes at me. “Who are you, really?”
I only wanted to take advantage of the favorable policies to resell a few small goods. How did I get dragged into their feud?
As their gazes grow more and more dangerous, all I can say is: Gentlemen, please let me go. I really just want to stay alive!
