A Radio Romance: You Are My Cure

Su Wan's world is a torture of the senses. As a synesthete, numbers are rotten apples, colors are shrill screams, and other people's voices are grating scratches. Su Wan has imprisoned herself on an isolated island, until one late night, I heard his voice over the radio. It was flowing golden honey, warm sunshine wrapping around me. He was Jiang Ye, the radio host who never showed his face. Su Wan became his only "anti-fan," calling in every night just to hear him read me a poem, his voice temporarily rescuing Su Wan from misery. Su Wan greedily clung to this illusory comfort, until he stepped out of the radio station, bringing the voice I relied on to survive, and stood right in front of Su Wan, real and unmistakable. In that moment, all of Su Wan's defenses crumbled, not from joy, but from sheer terror. Su Wan was afraid that this one and only cure would stop working beneath the sunlight of reality. So Su Wan chose to run away. What Su Wan didn't know was that while Su Wan saw Jiang Ye as a cure, he had long since come to see me, his strange listener, as the only light in his lonely nights.
