The Stories and Interpretations of Guanyin's 100 Divination Sticks

Guanyin fortune sticks are a folk Buddhist tradition rooted in faith in Guanyin, used to seek answers and guidance through divination.

They are usually kept in a container holding bamboo sticks, each corresponding to a written fortune. Their essential elements include:

A four-line poem, often using allusions or metaphors to suggest whether the fortune is auspicious or inauspicious.

Fortune rankings that divide the sticks into three grades: upper, middle, and lower. Each grade may be further subdivided, such as very auspicious, middling, or very inauspicious, directly indicating how favorable one's prospects are.

An explanation that briefly interprets the poem and offers guidance on specific matters such as the household, marriage, and career success.

Different versions of Guanyin fortune sticks have emerged over time. This book covers a set of 100 sticks. The complete ritual of drawing a fortune usually involves burning incense and praying silently, shaking the container and drawing a stick, then tossing divination blocks, also known as jiaobei, to confirm the result as a sign of reverence.

This book systematically compiles and interprets the tradition of 100 fortune sticks originating at the Guanyin Hall of Tianzhu Temple. Its main features include:

The System is organized around the twelve Earthly Branches, such as the Zi and Chou palaces, and presents all 100 written fortunes in detail.

In addition to a poem and explanation, each stick includes a related historical story, such as “Zhongli Attains the Dao” and “Su Qin Fails the Examinations,” as well as a moral tale encouraging virtue.

While preserving the original meaning of the fortunes, the book also incorporates Buddhist scriptures and Zen thought in its interpretations. It aims to guide readers toward a rational view of divination, treating it as inspiration for the wisdom needed to navigate life.

Its core value lies in offering a perspective for reflection. Treat the fortunes as a source of inspiration, not absolute predictions. Whatever the result, maintaining a positive attitude and making sound decisions based on reality are what matter most.
