Synopsis

An isolated city perched on a sheer cliff held out alone for thirty-six years in an age when Mongol cavalry swept across Eurasia. The young swordsman Wu Xuanqing and the talented Shen Xiaoyuan meet amid the fires of a war-torn age. They witness and take part in the construction of Fishing Town, from its very beginnings. They share in the triumph of the “broken whip of the gods” and endure the despair of Xiangyang's fall and the tragedy of Yashan. When the entire Southern Song collapses, they become the soul of its last isolated city. This is no simple tale of defending a city. It is a long, searching interrogation of what it means to hold one's ground: when the land lies shattered, should one die for one's principles, or preserve a sliver of hope for civilization? From loyalty to the emperor and defense of the land to the protection of civilization, from fiery young swordsmen to wise elders, Wu Xuanqing and Shen Xiaoyuan spend nearly a century answering this question in a way that transcends their age. Though the isolated city ultimately opens its gates and surrenders under the “Three Agreements Beneath the Walls,” it wins another kind of victory: no killing or looting, no destruction of ancestral temples, and the people and soldiers free to choose their own fate. Afterward, the seeds of civilization quietly spread into broader realms of time and space along three paths: across the seas to the south, through the preservation of books in remote mountains, and along the links forged by trade. The Thirty-Six Autumns of the Isolated City is not merely a forgotten miracle of war, but a grand epic about how civilization can survive intelligently in the depths of despair. It tells not of how a city fell, but of how a spirit lives forever.

For Fans of Late Ming Historical Military Fiction: The Best of the Best

Looking for books like I Passed Myself Off as Chongzhen's Son, Cut Through the Qing Army, and Revived the Ming. The battle scenes feel realistic, the characters fit their historical counterparts, and the payoff is well paced. The protagonist struggles to survive against the odds and plans carefully at every step. No massive tech-tree development and no golden finger.

Looking for High-Quality Historical Fiction. No Mindless Power Trips or Brain-Dead Plotting

I want high-quality historical fiction that’s engaging and doesn’t dumb things down or rely on brainless plots. It can be satisfying, but don’t treat readers like idiots. No stories like the one where the protagonist fools Cao Cao’s quartermaster about the provisions from the start, or those where a literati protagonist suddenly has the strength of a tyrant. They’re unoriginal and mindless...
