Portraits Before the Throne

The Emperor's Portrait

Blood is hidden in the pigments, and injustice is woven into every stroke.

An old painting by a former general brings to light the ten-year heartache of the new emperor, Xiao Yan. A lonely orphan from the Imperial Painting Academy, A Wu, conceals the mystery of her family's ruin.

She turns her brush into a blade and slips into the palace, tracing her enemies across rice paper. He casts a net of power and reopens old cases, cutting out corruption at court. From wary probing to entrusting their lives to each other, they join forces to unravel the mystery: she maps the tangled web of power and wealth, while he clears the halls of government of their shadows.

On the day the injustice is finally redressed, he offers her his empire as a bride price. But she turns toward a wider battlefield:

“Your Majesty, the inner palace cannot contain the future of all the women under heaven.”

She opens schools for girls and establishes female official posts, bringing brush and ink beyond the boudoir so women can help write history. He defies all opposition, reforms old institutions, and opens new paths, making imperial power a shelter for the people's livelihood.

At last, they unveil the Map of the Unified Empire together before the throne.

She renders mountains, rivers, and cities in delicate detail, while his vermilion imperial seal bears witness to the land's enduring unity.

The scroll depicts more than territory. It captures the just and enlightened world they fought together to create:

Women can stand in the halls of government, lone courage can illuminate the long night, and brush and ink can finally sweep away injustice.

One brush, two people;

ten years of injustice, a legacy for the ages.

Her brush breaks through the darkness, and ink stirs the waves.
