In a nutshell: To save her family, she takes her twin sister’s place and enters a glittering world of power and fame. Using traditional cosmetics as a cover for espionage, she uncovers arms codes amid a tangled romance with a brilliant, scheming young marshal, and embarks on a thorny journey toward awakening to her country’s plight.
Main plot: In the Republican era, Su Ji, the foremost cosmetics house in Gusu, is struck by disaster. To save her family, the elder sister, Su Yingxue, is forced to take the place of her innocent, lively twin, Su Yingyue, and marry Fu Yunshen, a young warlord marshal with power over the region. By day, she is the marshal’s wife, navigating the world of wealth and influence, and the head of Su Ji Cosmetics, fighting to secure a future for the family brand amid business rivalries. By night, she becomes a covert operative known by the codename “Painted Eyebrow,” using the talent she inherited from her mother, the ability to decipher the formulas of all things, to decode arms intelligence hidden in cosmetic recipes. In this spy war disguised as a beauty business, Su Yingxue and the suspicious, enigmatic Fu Yunshen progress from mutual probing and distrust to fighting side by side and falling deeply in love. She must not only face a hostile takeover attempt by the Japanese cosmetics brand Snow Cherry Hall, which is backed by a Japanese spy organization, but also wrestle with the moral question of sacrificing innocent lives to pass on intelligence, all while guarding against the danger of her impostor identity being exposed. In the end, when her sister returns and the truth behind the identity switch is revealed to the world, Su Yingxue turns the tide with a “cosmetics scheme” and, faced with the ultimate choice between love, family, and duty to her country, transforms from a sheltered young woman into a pillar of strength in a time of chaos.
