Wind and Tide

After Hong Kong fell in December 1941, Macau became a vital port for the exchange and transit of strategic goods between nations, as well as an international intelligence hub, thrust into the eye of the storm. The Portuguese government in Macau claimed to be “neutral,” but in practice it allowed the Japanese military's Sawasaki intelligence agency to run rampant. He Xian, a small-time silver shop owner, moves his entire family to Macau and unexpectedly becomes embroiled in political turmoil and underworld intrigues beyond anything he could have imagined. During this time, He Xian meets Qiao Yinwan, a patriotic young woman. With the encouragement and support of his wife, Guo Qiwen, he joins forces with the Communist Party's agent in Macau, Ke Lin, patriotic Chinese businessman Ma Wanqi, and other people of principle. Driven by strong patriotism and a sense of responsibility, they unite their compatriots and rally the strength of Macau's Chinese community organizations, including the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Kiang Wu Hospital, and Tung Sin Tong. Together, they fight back, engaging their adversaries in a series of battles of wits across the financial and trade fronts. In their hour of peril, they realize that only the Communist Party of China can save China and give the Chinese people a new hope. Patriotic Chinese in Macau and the Communist Party of China stand together in their struggle against the Japanese invaders, outmaneuvering them in financial, intelligence, and supply warfare, and winning one major victory after another. Macau's resistance movement not only helps its people weather the difficult years of upheaval in the city's history, but also gathers vast quantities of supplies and funds, making an important contribution to China's war effort and the worldwide war against fascism.
