A terrifying ghost story with no explanation
The day Huzi died, every dog in the village barked through the night.
It wasn’t ordinary barking, but a whimpering sob forced out from deep in their throats, as if they had seen something invisible to humans and were so terrified they could barely make a sound.
Li Jianjun found the body at dawn the next day. He was cutting reeds by the pond at the eastern end of the village when his sickle hooked a small, waterlogged hand, pale and bloated. He fell backward into the mud in fright, then scrambled and rolled all the way back to the village to call for help.
By the time the adults arrived, Huzi’s body had already floated to the edge of the pond
