The Biography of Lü Zhi: A Struggle Between Power and Human Nature

This novel centers on the awakening of power and the struggle over human nature under the shadow of survival. It breaks free of the narrow label of “poisonous empress” to focus on Empress Lü’s complete transformation, from a virtuous wife in Pei County to the uncrowned empress of the early Han. Drawing on the historical record of the early Han as its foundation, and delving deeply into her political wisdom and struggle to survive, it uses accessible storytelling to portray how, amid the chaos at the end of the Qin and the turmoil over imperial power in the early Han, a woman was pushed step by step from the simple desire to “manage the household for her husband and secure her son’s future” to the pinnacle of power, ultimately bringing her life full circle amid the contradiction between preserving the dynasty and monopolizing authority. The narrative maintains a commoner’s perspective rather than piling up historical records, revealing the many sides of her character through specific events: her resilience during years held captive in Chu, her resolve in protecting her son’s claim to the throne, her political foresight as ruler, and the loneliness of her later years, when everyone had turned against her.
